Sony: “Too Early” for a PlayStation Vita Price Cut

August 17, 2012 by Alex Co

Sony exec Shuhei Yoshida confirms that a price cut for the PS Vita won’t be happening soon.

I think it's safe to assume now that Sony didn't see the level of success they were hoping with its next-gen handheld the PlayStation Vita. While the handheld needs games right now to move units, people are also speculating that cutting the console's price would also give it a shot in the arm at retail it desperately needs.

However, don't count on that happening soon as Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida claims that "it's too early" for a PS Vita price cut.

So, how can the PS Vita turnaround, then? Yoshida thinks the games will have to do…for now.

At a certain point in the future we would like to address the pricing issue for some of the people who are waiting. But this year we are trying to add value by creating different types of bundles. We announced we will provide LittleBigPlanet PS Vita bundle pack. That's affordable for people who are looking for a good deal.

It's worth noting that the PS Vita's main competitior in the handheld gaming genre — the Nintendo 3DS — cut its price from $249.99 to $169.99 a mere six months after launch due to fledgling sales…with good results as the 3DS is now selling like hotcakes again — just like its predecessors.
